Why organic milk? Many new parents as well as parents that are expecting to have a child have asked me this question!

I fed my son organic cow’s milk ever since he was 6 months old. He’s now almost 4 years now. Though the organic milk is a bit more expensive than regular non-organic milk, it certainly is a better choice. I think the organic milk contributed to his strong immune system. I can honestly say that my son has had a serious cold once in his entire life.

By being organic means that the cows were fed an organic grain diet. The cows are also able to roam openly. The farming practice of organic food is also better for the environment. Organic foods are free of synthetic chemicals found in non-organic foods. According to Advancing the Chemical Sciences Website, 2008 “there is a worry that intensive farming… will destroy the fertility of the land and in the long run organic farming will secure the future for sustainable farming.”, www.rsc.org.
Pesticides used in non-organic farming are very dangerous to one’s health. An infant’s body is by no way capable of defending itself against the harshness of unsafe pesticides found in milk and other food products. An infant is susceptible to illnesses such as colds and fever.

The sales of all organic foods have increased tremendously over the past few years. People are realizing that the organic industry provides foods that are healthier. Some parents may argue that organic milk is too costly for their tight budget. However, when one considers the benefits of organic milk as well as all the illnesses can be avoided, parents cannot afford not to buy organic milk for their infants! Children are more vulnerable to illnesses and do need the important nutrients found in organic milk so as to build a stronger immune system.
Pediatricians do emphasize that infants need the presence of good fats in their diet. The animals on industrial farms are exposed to pesticides, heavy metals as well as synthetic hormones. Organic milk, on the other hand have none of these toxic items. One study done proved that organic milk taken by infants with eczema helped reduced this eczema growth by 36 per cent. The fatty nutrients required for optimal health of an infant is largely present in organic milk. These fatty nutrients include conjugated linolenic acid (CLA), vitamin E, natural beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary fats are essential in early brain development. Visual development is also largely dependent on obtaining the omega 3 fatty acids found in cows milk. The cows do obtain their high omega 3 by feeding on grass. This explains why grass-fed cow’s milk is high in omega 3 acid and extremely important for a child’s development. In addition organic cows milk contain natural vitamin E and beta-carotene which help protect the milk from going bad quickly. The CLA found in organic milk helps maintain a child’s metabolism which protects children from weight gain. It is accurate to state that organic milk is more nutritious and less toxic.
All parents would want the best for their children. Choosing organic milk is one of the first steps a mother can take to ensure that her child is given the right nutrients. A nutritious diet ensures and help aid in this very special time of growth and development in a child’s life.
